Religious certitude is bad for you

In case you didn't know, certainty about religious or spiritual matters is not only dangerous and an impediment to progress, but is on the decline in the "Christian" world, and thank goodness, writes Stephen Weinberg in his review of uber-atheist Richard Dawkins' new anti-religion book The God Delusion.

Is irreligious certitude therefore good for you? And is Dr. Dawkins' certitude really irreligious? His beliefs about the origin of the universe have not been proven. He certainly does not tolerate other beliefs and is on a crusade to convert all people.

I've heard that Dawkins won't interact with religious people in public forums because he thinks it will give them the impression of legitimacy. Thus, he ignores legitimate challenges to his viewpoints offered by prominent Christian philosophers and scientists. As a scientist he might applaud peer review, but as a philosopher he chooses his peers himself. That does seem a bit amateurish.
