what's a layer chicken?
"Layer" chickens, unlike "meat" chickens, live to lay eggs. These are a happy bunch, because they get to roam free (in a large fenced area) for up to five years. Whereas "meat" chickens get the knife in two years and live in much smaller caged areas. These layer chickens have it made because, like I mentioned earlier, they get to roam free. Most eggs at the market come from layer chickens that live in very small quarters.... basically we were at a farm that was mostly organic. The animals are treated pretty humanely. They also raised bunnies and hogs, soon they'll raise goats.
